“It is my belief that it is not the model of therapy that predicts positive outcomes, but the quality of the relationship between myself the therapist and you the client”
Lisa Rodger (Prof.Dip Psy C, Cert Hyp C)

Hello, my name is Lisa, and I am a qualified therapist based in St Albans, because you are reading this it means you are ready to take the next step in finding the right therapist for you.

How therapy works and how I can help

Therapy is a process for change. It offers you a safe space to explore patterns of behaviour, relationships and life’s ups and downs.

I offer you empathy, trust and confidentiality. Providing you with that safe space to navigate relationship struggles, major life events or self-discovery. This provides the opportunity for self-reflection, emotional growth and gaining important insights.

I view therapy as a collaboration, a working alliance if you will, between 2 people. You are the expert of yourself and I have expertise in various different therapeutic approaches and models. This does give me a metaphorical ‘therapy tool box’ to reach into once I have an understanding of your needs.
Unlike family and friends, I provide an impartial perspective, helping you gain clarity and the safety to express your emotions freely.

We can’t change or erase what happened in the past but we can change your relationship with it and help you move forward with new understanding, perspective and resilience.

Therapy does require openness and commitment from you. That is why building a trusting and warm relationship with you is at the heart of how I see myself as a therapist. I will go at your pace and be led by you.
The most important relationship you will ever have is the one with yourself. My role is to encourage self-compassion, silence your inner critic and boost your confidence.

Let’s work together!

“In my early professional years, I was asking the question: How can I treat, or cure or change this person? Now I would phrase the question in this way: How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for their own personal growth?”
Carl Rogers, Psychologist
My experience, training and knowledge

I work with a wide range of issues that include, but are not limited to, stress, anxiety, depression, bereavement, loss, low self-esteem, OCD, addiction, self-harm.
I have a particular interest in working with:
Grief, Loss and Bereavement So many of our struggles can come from grief that has not been expressed. Experiencing a significant loss – such as a death of a loved one, the end of a significant relationship, end of a career or simply moving to a new a challenging phase of life – can trigger a broad and complex range of emotions.

While grief is a natural process, sometimes it can feel like you are ‘stuck’ or that you don’t you feel like you ‘should’ feel. It is important during these times to find the ways to be compassionate and kind to yourself and recognise that there is no right or wrong way to feel. We all grieve differently!

Together we can explore emotions such as guilt, anger and the ‘if onlys’. Find ways to express the words and emotions that you feel were not said or shown at the time. To reach the point of acceptance where you can move forward with your life in a new way.

Miscarriage, Infertility and Menopause
Miscarriage and infertility are significant losses in people’s lives. Women and men need the time and space to grieve the loss of a child and an expected future. In our society it has been difficult to find the right space to express and share this grief openly and honestly. I believe in creating a trusting relationship where people can explore what it means for them to have lost a child at any stage. Together we can explore how to navigate a different landscape to the one imagined.
Menopause can be a confusing transitional phase for many women. It is as an area that has not always been addressed with the compassion and openness needed to encourage understanding of the complex emotions that can come with this stage of life. Thankfully, better knowledge and information is now available to both women and men. I can offer a safe space to help you accept and find the best transitional support for you.
My message is you do not have to suffer in silence.
Anxiety, OCD and Intrusive Thoughts
Our brains are very clever but sometimes misinformed. The primal part of our brains main aim is to keep us safe. It is always alert to danger – sometimes overly alert! I often refer to it as a misinformed best friend. We all have a different relationship with our anxious brain. When it comes to anxiety and related issues, I believe knowledge is power. I can work with you to recognise and understand your relationship with anxiety and what it is trying to keep you safe from; what is real and what isn’t. How you can control it rather than it control you.

Working Creatively with Children and Young People
Early intervention is important to me. If I can help a child or young person understand and make sense of their overwhelming and often confusing emotions, I can support them in finding healthy coping strategies now and in the future.

I am trained to work creatively at different stages of a child’s development. Children and young people don’t always have the language skills to explore challenging times and emotions. Play and creativity is often the way they make sense of what is happening in their inner world. Through gaining trust and creating a safe space, I can help them express and understand these difficult feelings.

Am I the right therapist for you?

I understand how daunting it can be reaching out for help in the first place. I have been where you are now. In the past I struggled with anxiety and low self-esteem. I found the right therapist who helped me be curious and explore early childhood experiences and make sense of some of my unconscious unhealthy behaviours. This gave me the courage to make positive informed choices to flourish and grow. This is one of the reasons that today I am a qualified and experienced therapist working in the heart of St Albans
I believe in individuality and inclusivity. I will work with you if I believe I have the right experience and skills to support you in achieving your therapeutic goals. I view therapy as a collaborative process with open dialogue to discuss what is working for you and what is not.
I have experience of working with children from the age of 4, adolescents and adults.
I recognise we are all unique with different needs, beliefs and values; what works for one person may not work for another. This is fundamental to how I approach working with clients, enabling me to tailor the tools and techniques to best serve you.
I work with you either in person, online or telephone. This makes support readily available and allows you to choose the therapeutic space that feels right for you.
Building a positive and trusting relationship is at the core of my work with my clients, which is why I offer a free and informal 15-minute introductory telephone call to find out if I am the right therapist for you.
I am an accredited member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS) and work within their ethical framework.
